In Chancay Bay
The schooner "Virgen de Covadonga", was built in Spain, in the shipyard Arsenal de la Carraca (Cádiz) and launched in 1859. It had been built by Royal Order of Isabel II on June 10, 1857. Its keel was placed on the February 13, 1858 and its final tests were made until January 28, 1861. During the conflict with Spain was captured by the Chilean Navy and was considered a war trophy.
From August of 1880, was blocking the port of Chancay. On September 13, the schooner was sunk off the coast of Chancay due to the action of a torpedo engineered by the engineer Manuel Cuadros, who hid it in a small boat but with a beautiful decoration, which when hoisted to the side of the Chilean ship exploded. This caused a hole and the sinking in two minutes of the Covadonga. Lieutenant Decio Oyague was in charge of placing the explosive in the decoy boat.
In this action his commander died and 74 members of his crew, in addition, 32 prisoners were made. The loss of this ship originated in Chile great regret for being a beloved ship, both for being considered as the manager of the sinking of the Peruvian frigate Independence, and for being a trophy of war having been snatched from Spain.
